Shotgun
When I was a freshman in high school, some of my older pals cut school to drive around and party on a beautiful sunny day. That was the last of them. I knew a boy who told everyone you could see pieces of flesh still attached to the wreckage and even claimed to have found a kidney. Sick, but when you're fourteen, you do what you can.
When we recorded this one, we were trying to get the most upclose, dead, seventies sounding drums we could, which is not everyone's cup of tea, but it sure was mine. I played the really clumsy electric piano parts, and Brendan did all the stuff that sounds good, including my favorite bassline of all these songs. My mom and brother Jeff stopped by the studio and were impressed with how much stuff you can fit into a single cutting room. They were a little grossed out when I told them what the lyrics came from, though my mom remembered the accident well, since she was a teacher at our school then.
