Go Home Mary

Mary abandoned her idyllic life as a beachbum and oil painter when warnings about skin cancer began; she died from ovarian cancer many years later. She did get to go home and be with the early spring garden and her family before that though.

Jay Bennett of Wilco (see links) played his Hammond A-100, which he has requested we refer to as his “big  huge organ”, for the first time ever on this song!  Brendan had to leave the session to cut voiceovers at Tim Stephens’ studio (see links - Lonely Trailer), so I got to be the engineer. Unfortunately, I fell asleep at the wheel, mesmerized by the sound or maybe dizzy from the Leslie, which just kept going and going while Jay sat waiting for me to notice he wasn’t actually playing anymore.  What pressure!  Eventually the driver blew out so that amp sounds even cooler now.  The B room features a wide variety of Leslie amps with various nonworking parts.  One day we’ll discover that someone has set up a grant for the exclusive purpose of rehabbing Leslies, and we will be able to use the entire allocation!  There’s not a thing in the world I could say against that Hammond; it plus infinitely many background vocals made this song real fat.
