Firefly Brendan and I cut acoustic guitar and voice for this one live, so the foundation was those tracks, untampered and not mealed over. Brendan added melodica, his mom's acoustic piano, bass, drums and such, and Neil Robinson (see A Big World of Fun for gossip about Neil and his cohorts) played accordian. What is the difference between concertina and accordian anyway? I saw a show about Lawrence Welk, who it is said left his family home at 21 or so with six dollars, whatever that instrument is called, and no English. Many of the people who worked for him said he was a tough guy and that he paid everyone the same amount regardless of what a hot star they might have become while in his employ. I know a guy who never misses the reruns of that show, which seem to be aired sometime on Saturday. The song is not about Lawrence Welk, but it could have been. I got the idea one evening on the front porch steps watching the lightning bugs go on and off when one of my spider pals, who had built a really big web right there on the stair railing, prepared to savor a delicious meal of firefly. I watched the little insect struggle, and his light got stuck on and just faded kind of slowly till he went still. Plus we live on a corner.
