Poor Baby

John C. Canfield, ever the critic and recently a daddy, wants to know what’s with all the math references in these songs.  Even though I still like the symbols and the terms, I have no idea what most of them are for anymore.  Don’t tell the UI Math Dept.  So anyway, in addition to the one small incident here that he’s making such a big deal about, this song features the amazing tenor sax stylings of Bill Herriott, who played with My Brother’s Keeper and gets called out of town and even out of the country for intriguing gigs.  Someday, if we can pluck him out of the sky, we hope to have Bill over for a rehearsal!  Brendan was the rhythm section on this one and also added acoustic piano that he drove to his mom’s in St. Louis to cut and vibes that he played at UI.  Todd Fletcher played electric piano (the tube Wurlitzer Bob Kimbell called “creamy”) and guitar on this one.  Drums and Wurli were cut in the A Room by Jonathan Pines.  Todd has been in so many great pop groups in Champaign-Urbana that I don’t even know where to start! Okay I’ll start with Twiggy, June & the Exit Wounds, Superhero Forehead, and so on.  He played guitar and sat in the backseat with the Moon Seven Times for about a year too.

One time during rehearsal, Todd (whose sister says he plays “doodly doodly do”) and Brian had a solo contest with this song.  They had to make a lot of faces to get me to come back in for the one line at the end so they could get back to business with their duel until the end of the tune, which did come eventually.  Unfortunately, Rob and the TV crew were not there.
